About NSMC

Partners HealthCare System, Inc., (PHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Its mission is to provide integrated, high-quality health care and to enhance healthcare quality and value.

In addition to the founding members, PHS includes North Shore Medical Center, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, McLean Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Shaughnessy Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital, as well as community health centers, rehabilitation and home care services and primary care and specialty physicians.

There are many advantages to NSMC’s membership in Partners Healthcare. As part of the largest healthcare system in Massachusetts, NSMC physicians and staff are part of an extraordinary network of expertise and information. This talent is available to our patients in many ways, including clinical program development, technology advances and joint research efforts.

Collaboration with MGH/BWH

With the support of PHS, NSMC has developed a host of collaborative programs with Massachusetts General Hospital including cardiac surgery and angioplasty in the NSMC Heart Center and a fully integrated pediatric program with Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. Collaboration between the NSMC Cancer Center, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, and Dana Farber/Partners Cancer Care brings promising clinical trials to patients of the North Shore. There are ongoing efforts in several of these areas to apply standard practices and protocols to patient care in both hospitals.

NSMC also offers several programs in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Our reproductive endocrinology program is fully integrated with the Center for Reproductive Medicine at BWH. Through the NSMC Women’s Center in Danvers, the services of the BWH Maternal Fetal Medicine program are available. Staffed by BWH perinatologists, this program focuses on prenatal diagnosis and management of high-risk pregnancy.

Technological Innovations

In addition to clinical programs, NSMC benefits from advanced technology that is revolutionizing the quality of patient care. For example, NSMC physicians can call up a patient’s Lifetime Clinical Record during an inpatient stay to review diagnostic test results, medical history and more. Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOM) enables physicians to place medication, testing or treatment orders electronically – an advance that can dramatically reduce medication and treatment orders. Longitudinal Medical Record (LMR)
is another advance that replaces the physician’s paper office chart with an electronic version that enables doctors to access important clinical data from any site within the Partners network.

Partners membership benefits:

  • Standardized medical care between hospitals
  • Faster, more precise communication through technology
  • Teaching hospital input
  • Participation in clinical research trials
  • Community outreach support
