Clinical Research at NSMC

The Norman H. Read Charitable Trust was established in 1985, by Texas oilman Norman Read. North Shore Medical Center has been the grateful recipient of several grants totaling over $1.2M from the Trust.

Norman Read set up the trust in honor of his father and grandfather, both of whom made their fortunes in Salem. One of the conditions placed on the Trust is that the money has to be used for the benefit of Salem, Massachusetts. The town of Salem is the sole beneficiary of his trust.

Norman Read graduated from Yale University in 1913 and completed a Masters of Science in Geology at Columbia University. The following year he began prospecting in Alaska and Texas, where he developed lifelong businesses. Read had an interest in science and the mysteries of the unknown, and a strong sense of loyalty and place.
