Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care Construction on Schedule
2/1/2009

Construction of the new outpatient care center being developed in Danvers by North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is running on schedule. The state-of-the-art facility is scheduled to open in June of this year.

The Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care is a 122,000-square-foot outpatient facility and 80,000-square-foot medical office building, located at 100 Endicott Street. This sleek, modern facility will provide the latest in cardiac diagnostics, suites for outpatient and minimally invasive surgery, and advanced imaging services, as well as serve as the expanded home of the new MGH/NSMC Cancer Center, a comprehensive cancer care center.

Construction on the exterior of the building wrapped up in the fall, allowing workers to focus all of their attention on the interior throughout the winter. All of the building’s progress is being tracked on NSMC’s construction blog for both employees and the community to see.

Featuring natural design elements like cherry wood and stone exterior panels and a spacious two-story atrium, the facility incorporates the healing power of nature and light in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The three-story building is nestled into the natural slope of the land, lowering the overall profile of the building so that only two floors will be visible from Endicott Street. The new cancer center, located on the lower level, has its own entrance overlooking tidal wetlands and a healing garden, providing soothing vistas and natural light to patients receiving chemotherapy treatments.

Designed by renowned architectural firm Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, the building is being constructed by Walsh Brothers Construction, Inc., which specializes in modern medical facilities.

NSMC (North Shore Medical Center) is a multi-site health system headquartered in Salem, Mass., which includes NSMC Salem Hospital, NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn, NSMC North Shore Children’s Hospital, NSMC Cancer Center, NSMC Heart Center, NSMC Women’s Center and the physician network known as Charter Professional Services Corporation.

Massachusetts General Hospital, established in 1811, is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where nearly all its active staff physicians hold faculty appointments. The 900-bed hospital offers sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery. Each year the MGH admits more than 45,000 inpatients and records more than 1.5 million visits in its extensive outpatient programs at its main campus and off-site facilities. The MGH has consistently been named one of the nation’s top few hospitals by U.S. News and World Report.
