The Department of Medicine is the largest department at NSMC and includes a large and diverse group of primary care physicians, specialists, hospitalists and intensivists. Primary care physicians provide the vanguard of care for our patients, with a strong focus on preventing disease prevention and managing patients with chronic medical conditions. A large network of NSMC primary care physicians is located throughout the North Shore. The Department of Medicine also oversees the NSMC Hospitalist Program. Hospitalists are internal medicine physicians who work exclusively in hospitals, maintaining close communication with the primary care physicians during their patient’s hospitalization.

NSMC is fortunate to have a full complement of subspecialty physicians, covering all disciplines. These physicians provide a high level of expertise, including highly specialized services such as interventional cardiology, ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. Physicians within the Department of Medicine work collaboratively with other specialists from the Departments of Surgery and Radiology, providing truly multidisciplinary care for many conditions. Department of Medicine physicians oversee the intensive care units, and provide leadership for many inpatient and outpatient programs.

The goal of the Department of Medicine is to provide the highest quality of care in a friendly, safe environment. Physicians in the Department of Medicine are held to the highest standards that include regular assessment of the quality of care, patient satisfaction, and continuing education. Many members hold academic appointments and are invested in the education of medical residents and medical students.
