Residency at NSMC
What qualities do you look for in an applicant?

We look for individuals who demonstrate academic excellence, integrity, character, and kindness all characteristics needed to become a successful physician leader.

Don’t I need to go to a university program in order to obtain a good fellowship?

Residents from our program have been very successful in obtaining fellowships after residency. Fellowship placements have included positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, New England Medical Center, Yale-New Haven Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health.

Many of our graduates return to our community to practice their subspecialty and several are now attending physicians for our residency program

Does the program provide training in hospitalist medicine?

Yes. Our residents work directly with the hospitalists on our staff. The hospitalists act as the attending physicians during the time that residents move through the in-patient portion of their training. Our residents also work with hospitalists during a month-long consultative medicine rotation.

How do your residents do on the American Board of Internal Medicine certifying exam?

The program is committed to helping residents pass the boards. We supply funds for a board review course, educational material (i.e. board review tapes), and there are resident run board review question and answer sessions. As a result, nearly all of our residents pass the boards on the first try. In 2007, the pass rate was 100%.
