The Hereditary Cancer Risk Assessment Program at the NSMC Cancer Center offers genetic counseling and testing. The program may be useful for you if your personal or family history includes one or more of the following:
- Relative(s) with a known genetic mutation
- Cancer diagnosed at an early age
- Multiple blood relatives with cancer
- Bilateral cancers ( i.e. both breasts)
- More then one type of cancer in the same individual
Recent studies validate the use of genetic testing to identify individuals and families at high risk of developing certain cancers, enabling them to make better informed choices about their medical management. Counseling services include a personal cancer risk assessment based on individual and family history. Recommendations for pursuing genetic testing are based on assessment findings. If testing is recommended, results are usually available in four weeks. At that time, depending on the presence or absence of a genetic mutation, our genetic staff will make recommendations for treatment. All test results remain strictly confidential.
