North Shore Medical Center offers several different types of neurodiagnostic testing, available for both outpatients and inpatients. Neurodiagnostics is the study of electrical activity from the brain and nervous system. NSMC technologists record this electrical activity using a computer. The data is then interpreted by a group of specially trained neurologists from Essex Neurological and shared with your primary care physician.

NSMC Union Hospital Neurodiagnostic Tests:

EEGs

Electroencephalograms are given when your physician wants to evaluate a myriad of different neurological problems, from common headaches and dizziness to seizure disorders, strokes, syncope, dementia and degenerative diseases. The EEG is also used to determine organic causes for psychiatric symptoms. In addition the EEG is performed during carotid artery surgery to evaluate cortical functioning and in the evaluation of irreversible brain death (this is for inpatients only.)    Patients: how to prepare for this test

EPs

Evoked Potentials are ordered by your physician when he or she wants to evaluate a number of neurological problems, including spinal cord injuries, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis and acoustic neuroma.

EMG/NC

Electromyography / Nerve Conductions tests reveal diseases primarily of the peripheral nervous system, which can cause symptoms of tingling, numbness and pain.    Patients: how to prepare for this test

NSMC Salem Hospital Neurodiagnostic Tests:

EEGs and EMG/NC tests are performed at NSMC Salem Hospital. In addition, we perform ENGs.

ENGs

Electronystagmograms allow us to evalute inner ear disorders as opposed to neurological, psychological or other health conditions. This test is commonly ordered when a patient experiences dizziness or unsteadiness. It is the gold standard test for evaluation of possible Vestibular Neuritis, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and Bilateral Vestibulopathy.    Patients: how to prepare for this test
