The Cardiac Surgery program is an integral part of the NSMC Heart Center. Our surgeons hold joint appointments at MGH and NSMC, and work closely with experts at both facilities to bring advanced care to the North Shore. As a result, NSMC Heart Center enjoys exceptionally high levels of patient and family satisfaction.
Our newly constructed facility features a cardiac surgical care unit with adjacent operating rooms. There are eight private patient suites, and an outdoor terrace and waiting area for patients and families to use during recovery and rehabilitation. Integrated approach to patient care
Our success stems from our integrated approach to patient care.
Patients are admitted to their room the morning of surgery and receive all care in the same room, with the same nurses, physicians and staff. This includes preoperative preparation, postoperative intensive care, and pre-discharge education. The patient rooms are spacious and welcoming, providing the ultimate in comfort for patients and their families.
Collaborative care rounds
Collaborative care rounds are held daily. Family members are considered to be an integral part of the care team, which also includes nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physicians, pharmacists, exercise physiologists, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, chaplain and case managers. The team gathers in the patient’s room to discuss his or her progress and plan of care for the day. This gives patients and their familes the opportunity to ask questions and participate fully in each patient's care.
