Hearing loss can occur at any stage of a child’s development and for a variety of reasons. An infant, toddler or child is at risk for developing a hearing loss if there is a family history of hearing loss, a medical problem or genetic syndrome commonly associated with hearing loss, or a craniofacial abnormality (such as cleft palate, Down syndrome, or malformed ear). Exposure to very loud noises and certain infections can also lead to hearing loss. Other factors include head injury and significant medical difficulties following birth.
NSMC North Shore Children's Hospital is one of the state's DPH Level 1 approved evaluation centers.
If your infant or school-aged child fails the school hearing test, or if a family member or caregiver has expressed concerns about your child’s hearing, schedule your child for an audiology exam. Sometimes, children with hearing loss respond inconsistently to sound, saying “what?” frequently and inappropriately. Speech, language or other delays, or learning problems in school, may all be traced to a hearing problem.
