Sports Medicine physicians at NSMC offer comprehensive prevention, evaluation, advanced medical and surgical treatment, and physical therapy for sports and activity-related injuries. Their goal is to maintain and enhance patient mobility, improve health and fitness and reduce the likelihood of future injury.
These specialists treat sports injuries, perform reconstructive and arthroscopic surgery, perform joint replacement and offer arthritis treatment. Orthopedic surgeons at NSMC Union Hospital were the first physicians on the North Shore to offer autologous chondrocyte transplantation, an advanced tissue repair procedure involving the removal of cartilage, the culturing of that cartilage into a larger size, and the use of the new material to repair and regenerate damaged joint cartilage.
In addition, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers affiliated with Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital's innovative Sports Medicine Program offer sports physical therapy services, including biomechanical evaluation at six convenient North Shore locations.
